Set in the picturesque village of Fort Augustus at the head of Loch Ness, Sonas is well place for touring as it is set in the geographical centre of the Highlands.
From here to the west and northwest you can visit the Isle of Skye, Glen Coe, the Road to the Isles, the Isle of Mull, the stunning Applecross Peninsular, the rugged west coast scenery. East you can visit the city of Inverness, Elgin, Culloden Battlefield, romantic Cawdor Castle, Fort George and an abundance of Speyside Distilleries. Southeast is Aviemore and the grandeur of the Grampian mountains and northeast magnificent scenery towards Durness and John O'Groats. Each of these can be completed in a day from Fort Augustus, so a stay of a week or more will still leave you with more to see next year.
Close by it is easy to while away a few hours watching vessels climbing the staircase of locks on the Caledonian Canal, just a few hundred metres from Sonas. On the loch itself there are boat trips including a high-speed Loch Ness Express which makes a thrilling dash to and from the historic ruin of Urquhart Castle. There is more too including golf and tennis for the more active. The village contains a number of restaurants to cater for all budgets, some lively bars and a fine range of gift shops and two small supermarkets. There is also a hair dressers and a tourist information office. The Rare Breeds Croft is the ideal place to find some hairy coos to photograph.
